Their study was recently published in Scientific Reports.
The study found that fenbendazole interfered with multiple cellular pathways and caused the selective elimination of cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. It did this through moderate microtubule disruption, p53 stabilization, and interfering with glucose metabolism. This latter effect prevented cancer cells from absorbing the sugar they need to grow and thrive, essentially starving them.
To do so, fenbendazole disrupted the microtubules inside cancer cells and also interfered with the expression of GLUT transporters. This, in turn, blocked insulin-stimulated glucose uptake and starved cancer cells. It also lowered levels of hexokinase, which is an enzyme that is required for cell growth.
This is just one of a growing number of studies showing the potential for this class of drug to reduce the growth of cancer in humans. Other studies show that it can help prevent recurrence of certain types of cancer, as well as prevent the development of new tumors in patients with pre-cancerous lesions.
